Pearl Academy of Fashion Graduates Showcase
Their Final Collections at PORTFOLIO ‘09
All set to join the fashion industry, the graduating Fashion Design students of Pearl Academy of Fashion showcased their creative talent through Portfolio’09. Pearl Academy’s annual graduating show, “Portfolio”, which in the past has launched quite a few of the best known names in fashion industry, again saw talented debutants showcasing their forward-looking brilliant collections on 29th of May 2009 at Sirifort Auditorium, New Delhi. Mr. Gopal K. Pillai, Commerce Secretary, Govt. of India and Ms. Ritu Kumar, the well-known Fashion Designer graced the occasion by their valuable presence.
Portfolio ‘09was a huge success as the ramp sizzled with designer outfits worn by some of the better known models like Sonalika Sahay, Amanpreet Wahi, Krishna Somani, and Tina Chatwal of Wills Lifestyle India fashion week fame, Barkha Kaul, Jayashree Tahiliani, Sahiba Singh- Femina Miss India personality, among many others. The fantastic collections were based on themes like Anger (Krodh), Re-orienting Fashion, Hypnosis, Awadh-city of Nawabs, Life’s Corona to mention a few.

Overall 54 collections were displayed on the ramp, which every collection showcasing a unique inspirational background varying from nomadic banjaran of kutch, Delhi’s multi ethnicity, modern architecture, green leaves, geometric abstractions to magic of meditations. The students experimented with technology, non-conventional material, color palettes, silhouettes, surface texturing and fabrics in their collections.
Portfolio, which has made a name for itself as one the biggest annual events in its genre, has earned a respectable place in the calendar of the Fashion world. Fulfilling the promise of a glittering outcome, the show was hosted by the famous emcee and page 3 celebrity Ms. Ramneek Pantal. The creativity of the students was judged by an esteemed panel consisting of Kakoli Banerjee, Payal Jain, Nida Mahmood, Sunita Shankar, Sandhya Raman, Harpreet Kaur Bhatia and Tushar Bhartia. The fashion show was choreographed by Kaushik Ghosh, one of India’s leading fashion model choreographer and internationally renowned model trainer.

Business Management Students
Pearl Academy of Fashion (PAF) hosted Synthesis ’09 – an annual programme with dissertation and felicitation of the award winning research by Business and Technology Department of the year 2009. Attended by the eminent personalities from textile, apparel, media & government, the event marked PAF students' entry into a professional world. Guest of Honour Mr Badal Chaudhari, CEO, Numero Uno graced the occasion by his valuable presence.
Synthesis recognises the best research done by the students and awards them for their outstanding work. Students were given an opportunity to make formal presentations and address queries raised by industry members. The objective of the presentation was to enhance students’ knowledge and skills in the field of fashion and apparel industry. This year over thirty three projects were displayed from topics ranging from quality, domestic marketing, technology, consumer behaviour, brand launching, retail, inventory management etc. The event saw the some of the leading domestic and export companies taking deep interest in the potential demonstrated by various managerial applications on show. All students were given a chance to interact with industry visitors on a one-on-one basis.

Communication Design Graduates of Pearl Academy of Fashion organized Open Works ’09 – an exhibition showcasing their final graduatingworks at Stainless Art Gallery, Mathura Road, New Delhi on June 4th -5th 2009. The exhibition, which was inaugurated by Mr. Syed Usman, VP & Senior Creative Director, HONK J. The event was greatly appreciated by the visitors, many of whom were from industry interested in hiring talented youngsters.
The graduates of Communication Design explored a wide range of themes which included Global citizenship, Recycling, Branding for a Restaurant, Travel portal for unexplored places in India and Peace. Imagery and inspiration plucked from diverse sources and the remarkable treatment given to them by the students caught attention of the viewers. In fact one of the unique strengths of the programmes on Communication Design offered by Pearl Academy of Fashion is the encouragement offered to individualism and creative thinking. These programmes nurture professionalism and teach the art of polishing and adding sophistication to the final product.
The event was visited by professionals representing a wide spectrum of the creative industries. The works exhibited at "OPEN WORKS" offered them a glimpse of the rich and varied talent in the Academy.
The communication design programmes at Pearl Academy of Fashion cover foundation areas that strive to inculcate in the students the ability to visualize and represent ideas and concepts, understanding and application of design fundamentals, understanding of cultural manifestation and contexts, and their relevance to design, as well as effective verbal and non-verbal communication skills. These programmes also instill the skills in areas of emerging technologies and applications which help them gain competitive advantage in the job market. Students also gain valuable competencies in areas like animation and movie making.
Pearl Academy Graduates present Thread Works ‘09 ~ Final exhibition of Textile Design students at Stainless Gallery~
Textile Design Graduates of Pearl Academy of Fashion organized Thread Works ’09 – an exhibition showcasing their final graduating works at Stainless Art Gallery, Mathura Road, New Delhi on June 1st & 2nd, 2009. The exhibition was inaugurated by Shri Rajesh Pillai, Country Head, Kaybee Group and was well appreciated by the visitors, many of whom were from industry interested in hiring talented youngsters.
The gamut of subjects explored by the graduate designers ranged from philosophical (Existentialism) to religious (Agama) to mundane and highly relevant burning issues (Terrorist attack on Mumbai). One of the collections which had “Numerology” as its theme incorporated different mediums, characteristics and features associated with numbers to develop furnishings for “Hotel Rooms of Commonwealth games 2010”. This range was a creative surface ornamentation for hotel rooms. On the other hand the theme Urban Vintage looked back to existentialism with unique styling created by combining unexpected elements in form, color and material. The range reflected the art of gathering and reshaping, thereby creating vintage items in contemporary look. This range comprised knitted home furnishings for a drawing room story. Another collection used spiral forms to give the furnishings a Celtic look.
One widely appreciated range used Bhratanatyam and Odissi dance forms to bring vibrancy to drawing room décor.
The competition was so tough and the collections so beautiful that the judges for the event Mr. Deepak Chakravarty – Head Designer ITC & Ms. Shiva Kaul, CEO, Attira Designs had a tough time deciding the winners.
The Textile Design programme at Pearl Academy of Fashion develops practical skills, creative judgement and professional confidence in designing, making and evaluating textiles among the students. The programme helps develop the expertise to combine traditional materials and processes with innovation in order to provide exciting and contemporary materials-based textile design in print and weave. Studio work encourages student-centered learning and helps in building self-reliance, encourages experimentation and promotes enthusiasm for the field of textiles.
